The Western Cape Minister of Agriculture, Dr Ivan Meyer, and Executive Mayor of Overberg District Municipality, Sakkie Franke commemorated the Western Cape Department of Agriculture’s World Food Day event in Suurbraak. The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations was founded on 16 October 1945, after World War II. FAO continues to lead the annual World Food Day global celebrations, which has become the most celebrated event in the UN calendar. This year’s theme is “Leave No One Behind”.
In the lead-up to October, 100 food security projects have been implemented (45 x Suurbraak, 20 x Swellendam, 14 x Buffeljas, 11 x Barrydale, 3 x Rietkuil, and 7 x Malgas). A further 160 will be implemented in selected areas throughout October. The WCDoA will continue to roll out the “Plant one tree, eat for free” campaign as part of the food security initiative. In addition, fruit trees will be planted in some households and community projects. This is part of the provincial government’s drive to provide residents with opportunities for self-reliance and dignity by providing them with opportunities to supplement their food needs.
