VREDENBURG YOUTH EMPOWERED WITH FOOD GARDEN KITS

Casidra has achieved another milestone in its mission to support local agriculture by delivering food garden starter kits to farmers in the Vredenburg region. The initiative has been met with enthusiasm, as recipients eagerly embraced the opportunity to cultivate their own produce.

One of the beneficiaries, Derrick Michaels, expressed his excitement upon receiving his garden kit, stating, “I’m thrilled to start growing vegetables in my backyard. I aim to inspire other young people by demonstrating that we can positively impact our community.”

Derrick, who initiated his food garden in response to rising food prices, was motivated to create a sustainable solution for his household despite limited space and inadequate equipment. “With this starter kit, I’m ready to diligently nurture my garden, expand it, and eventually provide produce to those in need in our community”, said Derrick.

Another recipient, Louis Boois, also shared his enthusiasm about the programme. He alludes, “Creating job opportunities for the youth is crucial for our community. This support from Casidra and the WCDoA will elevate our gardens and we are eager to see its impact.”

Louis plans to use his produce not only to sustain himself, but to also create employment for young people by running a food stall, training them in garden cultivation, and eventually helping them establish their own gardens. He emphasised, “It’s important to show our youth their potential.

With proper guidance and support, they can lead the change needed in our communities.” Understanding farming is vital for the younger generation as it cultivates an appreciation for food production, promotes sustainable practices, and opens doors to potential careers in agriculture.

This initiative contributes to food security and environmental stewardship, reinforcing the importance of agriculture in our communities.
