TRANSFORMATIVE IMPACT OF THE MATZIKAMA MERINO GROUP PROJECT
Food security is more than just a buzzword—it’s a crucial element of a thriving society. It eases the burden on healthcare systems, drives economic growth, and fosters job creation while positively enhancing social wellbeing.
In the face of climate change and environmental threats, especially in the Western Cape, Casidra has taken a proactive approach to fortify food security. By prioritising the securing of essential production inputs such as barley, lucerne seeds, and fertiliser, they are paving the way for sustainable agriculture.
A prime example of our commitment is the Matzikama Merino Group Food Security project in Van Rhynsdorp. Nestled at the edge of the Nama-Karoo Biome, this semi-arid region has faced significant challenges. Casidra stepped up by preparing the soil, installing an infield irrigation system, and planting a hectare of lucerne a crop known for boosting lamb production up to five times compared to traditional dryland grass.
This success story spurred the local farmers to secure additional land from the Matzikama Municipality. With R150,000 in funding from the Western Cape Department of Agriculture, managed by Casidra, the project expanded to over four hectares of leased land. The initiative not only showcased Casidra’s vision, but also ignited a renewed sense of purpose among the farmers who started experimenting with Bana grass and prickly pear cactus for feed.
Today, the project is a model of effective hands-on management in fodder production, transforming previously unused Karoo veld into productive farmland through the use of recycled water. The lucerne field is now on its third harvest, and the Matzikama Merino beneficiaries have expressed their gratitude for the smooth execution and ongoing support.
Kudos to the Casidra team for their exceptional dedication and flawless implementation of this transformative project!
