GROWING TOGETHER: A LOVE FOR THE LAND

In the picturesque setting of St Helena Bay, Yusuf Patel and his son Yaseen are making significant strides in the agricultural community through their Shera Farming Project, which focuses primarily on sheep farming. Their farm supplies lambs wholesale to the Cartol Abattoir, bolstering local markets and contributing to the region’s economy.

As long-term beneficiaries of the Western Cape Department of Agriculture’s Comprehensive Agricultural Support Programme, the Patel family recently received a boom sprayer from Casidra’s project manager. This equipment, recommended by the Ruminant Commodity Project Allocation Committee, is set to enhance their farming operations.

“I grew up on a farm and developed a deep-rooted love for the land from an early age. As I matured, I recognised the potential in farming and took a bold step to begin my own journey by leasing a long-term farm in the area,” Yusuf Patel shared.

Yaseen, following in his father’s footsteps, has assumed the role of farm manager. His hands-on approach and strong connection to the land have been instrumental in managing the day-to-day operations. Beyond expanding their farming enterprise, the Patels are committed to uplifting the local community by creating job opportunities for residents of St Helena Bay and its surrounding areas.

“When faced with challenges, the natural beauty of our surroundings and my love for animals keep me positive and motivated,” Yaseen reflected, acknowledging the rewarding yet demanding nature of their farming life.

This father-son duo exemplifies dedication and resilience, demonstrating that the future of farming in St Helena Bay is indeed in capable hands.
