GROWING HOPE, ONE GARDEN AT A TIME

Casidra, in partnership with the Western Cape Department of Agriculture (WCDoA), continues its mission to enhance food security by distributing food garden starter kits to households in Riebeek-Kasteel, located on the West Coast. This impactful initiative, funded by the WCDoA, is transforming community backyards into flourishing green spaces, empowering residents to grow fresh and nutritious produce right at home.

In addition to providing the starter kits, beneficiaries receive hands-on training to ensure they can effectively utilise their new gardening tools. Casidra‘s Project Implementer, Ntaketo Hlatshwayo, guided beneficiaries through each kit item, offering valuable tips and advice on how to make the most of their gardening resources.

The response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive, with participants displaying enthusiasm, curiosity, and a strong commitment to success. One such beneficiary, Samuel Carolus, expressed his gratitude, saying, “I am deeply thankful to the WCDoA and Casidra for this opportunity to grow food in our backyards. The cost of living is rising, and unemployment is increasing, especially here in Riebeek-Kasteel.”

Already, Samuel is giving back to his community by donating some of his harvest to those in need, inspiring others to get involved and create positive change in their lives. His actions are a powerful reminder of the impact that local initiatives can have on both individual lives and the broader community.

By empowering individuals with the tools, knowledge, and support to grow their food, Casidra and the WCDoA are fostering sustainable, community-driven solutions to food insecurity, one garden at a time.
