CUTTING-EDGE CHICKEN HOUSE REVOLUTIONISES AGRICULTURAL SECTOR

Food security entails ensuring consistent access to sufficient, affordable, and nutritious food. At Casidra, we are dedicated to enhancing this security by equipping our communities with essential resources.

We are excited to unveil our newly constructed, state-of-the-art chicken houses, each equipped with built-in feeders designed to accommodate 8-10 chicken laying hens. These facilities will be distributed to our food security beneficiaries throughout the Western Cape.

In addition to the chicken houses, households across the province will receive the necessary supplies to kickstart their chicken layer and vegetable production gardens in their backyards.

Casidra’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr Keith Du Plessis, highlights, “Casidra supports the Western Cape Department of Agriculture’s Producer and Development Programme, which aids smallholder and commercial farmers. This initiative is crucial for transforming the agricultural sector to enhance productivity, drive economic growth, promote inclusion and equality, and create meaningful employment.”

Minister of Agriculture, Economic Development and Tourism, Dr Ivan Meyer, underscores the importance of tackling food insecurity and addressing malnutrition as key priorities for the Western Cape Government. Since taking office, Minister Meyer and the Western Cape Department of Agriculture have launched the One Home One Garden Initiative. This initiative marks a strategic transition from unsustainable food relief efforts to a focus on food security by encouraging households to establish their own chicken layers and vegetable gardens.

The One Home One Garden Initiative aims to ensure the affordability, availability, and accessibility of nutritious food by promoting sustainable household production, with the goal of meeting basic food security needs throughout the year.
