BRINGING SELF-SUSTAINABILITY HOME
Ellen Alard, a resident of Hooikraal in Moorreesburg, recently received a fully equipped chicken coop, expertly installed by Casidra as part of a food security initiative funded in collaboration with the Western Cape Department of Agriculture (WCDoA).
This drive involves setting up chicken coops and providing chickens, marking a tangible step toward fostering self-sustainability within the community. By equipping beneficiaries with the tools and resources to produce their own food, the initiative helps households reduce reliance on external sources, lower living costs and improve food security.
“The benefits of this project go beyond just providing fresh eggs,” said Ellen. “With this chicken coop, I can start a small-scale chicken farming operation. Raising our own chickens gives us fresh eggs every day and helps us save money, which makes a big difference for our family.”
According to Casidra‘s Project Implementer, Ntaketo Hlatshwayo, over time, this project will enable Ellen to sell surplus eggs to neighbours or reinvest in additional chickens, potentially generating a modest income stream.
This initiative highlights the importance of empowering communities to become more self-reliant. By promoting sustainable practices like backyard poultry farming, the project addresses immediate needs while contributing to long-term resilience and economic upliftment. It represents a holistic approach to rural development, paving the way for more sustainable and prosperous futures.
