A PATH TO A BRIGHTER FUTURE FOR ATLANTIS FARMERS
In June, residents of Atlantis saw a significant advancement in their fight against food insecurity and poverty. Casidra, in collaboration with the Western Cape Department of Agriculture (WCDoA), distributed food garden starter kits to local beneficiaries who had applied for financial aid a year earlier.
Melisizwe Mlitwawa, a first-time recipient from Witsand in Atlantis, highlighted the essential role of home food gardens in the region. He pointed out that these gardens are crucial for alleviating food insecurity and poverty while enhancing households’ wellbeing. The initiative has not only supported individual families, but also encouraged others in the community to start their own food gardens.
The WCDoA is integral to this effort, providing funding, guidance, and essential training on establishing and maintaining food gardens. Vusumzi Zwelendaba, Director of the Food Security Directorate, emphasised the Department’s view of food as a symbol of hope, wealth, dignity, wellbeing, and strength. He reaffirmed the WCDoA’s commitment to ensuring that no one is left behind.
The impact of the starter kits has surpassed expectations. One beneficiary, Daniel Solomon, expressed his profound appreciation, stating, “Initially, my expectations were low due to limited resources, but I am now extremely grateful for the starter pack. This success would not have been possible without the timely and effective support from Casidra’s Food Security team.”
This initiative has not only delivered immediate relief, but also established a foundation for long-term self-sufficiency and community empowerment in Atlantis.
